A new camper in the works…

August 2018

This is an off-road utility trailer. It has a metal floor. Unlike The Arizona with a wooden base, this will have a metal base and frame.
Another look at the metal utility trailer. The wheels are good for off-roading. This new camper that John’s going to build will be set up to drive off-road. It’ll also be smaller than the Arizona.

Creating the frame. Pictured here is the back part of the camper.
Welding the back part of the frame into place near the base of the camper.
A view of the frame from the front of the camper.

Early September 2018

The canoe rack. John added this piece to the frame. It sits just above the height of the fan (see photos below).

Frame Elements

Each corner of the frame is gusseted to make it stronger and stiffer. Pictured here also are the welds, sanded and ready to go for painting.
A place for the spare tire sits on the front of the frame.

The whole frame is now ready for painting.

The window sits on the driver’s side. It’s held in place here with clamps to show where it will be.

Overhead Fan and Other Features

The overhead fan sits on the frame to demonstrate where it will sit on the frame.

A view of the overhead fan from underneath.

The frame from the back. You can see the supports for the window, and the overhead fan. The back “shelf” will be for food storage, accessible from the back.

The frame of the camper from a front angle.  Getting ready to paint.

Diamond plating serves as a step to access the top of the camper.

Mid-September 2018

The floor is painted and the wooden sides are going up. From this view, you can see the side door and the window.
Another view of the side panels. You can see the front of the camper as well as the side window.

This is a scarf joint that joins the two roof panels. It’s glued together and then held down with screws to create a very strong joint.

A closer view of the painted floor. It’s thickly painted with oil enamel.

The ceiling of the camper where the fan is located.

Late September 2018

Interior view of the camper, looking in from the back. Getting ready to add insulation and the back galley.

Installing the insulation – rear view – looking at the side window.

Insulation – rear view – looking at the entry door.

Looking in from the entry door. Plywood now covers the insulation.

Looking in from the entry door. Storage shelf installed.

Galley now has a shelf and enough room to store a 6 gallon container for water.

A slightly different angle to see the broader view of the camper and galley.

Galley with secured rear door.

Straight view of galley. It has enough room for water and food storage, and will have an LED light installed underneath the shelf.

The galley door opens up to be flat for culinary needs or as a place to work. It will be held up with a wooden rod.

Coming together! It’s almost ready to paint. It still needs trim.

October 2018

Painting and sanding took a long while. This is why there were less updates for October. Finishing touches are going on now, and this camper will be ready for sale the second week of November, 2018!

The overhead fan is one of the last things to be installed, along with the final piece of trim.

A view from the front, paint and all. The spare tire and a small RV battery will sit in front.

A view from the back and side. Getting everything ready to add the window. The diamond plating side stops are all painted to match the bottom of the camper. After all the finishing touches are complete, it’ll be time to add the tires.

The finished galley with the “table” lowered.

A view of the upper part of the camper and the closed galley door. Not visible is the fan on top.

Another view of the galley from the back with the closed door.

Detail of the trim on the outer door includes a little protection from the rain.

November 2018 – Finishing touches and now for sale!

The camper – driver’s side view. The spare tire sits in front, as does the battery that powers the lights insight the camper.

The rear view of the camper.

The opening for the fan. You can also see the rack for canoes and other outdoor equipment.

The rear table. A rope cable holds the table in such a way that allows for using all three sides. The storage area holds a 6-gallon water jug, as well as storage bins.

The camper is light enough for easy towing by a small truck or SUV.

The Colorado – Interior View

Looking toward the back of the camper. There is a small storage area for items such as books, flashlights, shoes and other similar items.

The front view of the interior camper. The “bed area” occupies the floor space of the camper. A built-in shelf holds larger items and camping gear.

The Colorado: sold March 2019.
